Final Major Project 2: Product Quote

Because my first Final Major Project didn't go to plan and I thought it the whole idea was just an excuse because I had no other ideas. It pushed me to do another final major project, as I know I am a fast worker and I'm always giving myself extensions this seem to be a challenge.

Final Major Project 2 Brief

I will be taking a previous project quote from graphic design second year and will design it into a visual product, which will be a prototype. I will not personally be manufacturing the product but it will be all my design. If my design is original, I plan to have it patented in order for me to keep 100% control of the product.

I will also be designing the Product name, logo and how to use leaflet if vital to the product.

I believe I am a hand’s on graphic designer and I prefer to see what I have achieved rather than seeing in flat in a portfolio or in paper form. This is an ambitious project for me and is perfect for my final major product, this will be a project I will be proud of showing in the final year show.

I will be concentrating entirely on the quote and how I can represent it visually and not on Friedrich Nietzsche the person who quoted:

The quote

“When you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.”

Friedrich Nietzsche, 19th century, Germany philosopher.

I sent this diagram to plastic manufacturers to see if they could create this shape, but didn't have luck and was told it would not be possible.

so I had to compromise with what is on the market and see if I could find something of a similar measurement and shape.

I only thing I was finding was vases but they was no way big enough I did come across some large vases of a similar shape but they were mad out of glass which I didn't want to work with.

I decided to take a trip to Home Base where i was bound to find something. . .
And I did I found something at last . . .

This was great as it had a guide for the electrician to follow the LED lights around, instead of the channel dip that i was trying to get put into it if it was manufactured.

Because of it being very large and not stylish enough for the home, but stylish for the garden I decide to make the light into a garden light instead of a house hold light.

Taking this into consideration i thought about having a stand for the light to go onto, and brought a stick of wood, Hex bolt and stone spray paint for the made stand to match the pot .

STRIPWOOD £1.48
SPRAY PAINT £6.98
HEX BOLT £1.38
TROJAN POT £20.00
TOTAL £29.84

Without realising this project will link with my deconstruction reconstruction as I'm am using a Plant Pot for a different purpose.

This is a celling Light which would be flush to the celling and the LED lights would act as the light instead of a light bulb.
This is a floor light with is plugged into the mains.

This is a garden light which I will be creating, with the material I have got.

This is a side lamp which would be plugged into the mains.

 Next Stage

The next stage is to order the LED lights and get the electrician to put them in for me.
Lucky enough for me my boyfriend is a electrician so he can help with with the ordering.

www.ledhut.co.uk

Is where the lights were ordered from.

I did also research different places such as IKEA
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/categories/departments/living_room/20515/

But I found LEDHUT had the best prices and free delivery.

I had to firstly decide what colour i wanted the LED strips lights, i had the option of cool light(white), warm light, red, blue, green or multicoloured.

All LED lights were all the same prices and I decided to go for the multi coloured LED lights because I could change the settings on them and had more of a choice,
because of this a controller had to also be order to change the settings of the lights and finally a transformer to lower the volts going through the cable into the mains.

MULTI COLOUR GEL WATERPROOF LED STRIP - 6O LEDs P/M - 2.5M ROLL £14.75
36 WATT LED TRANSFORMER £16.77
MULTI-FUNCTIONAL CONTROLLER FOR RGB LED STRIPS £13.95
PLUS FREE DELIEVERY ON ALL ITEMS
TOTAL £45.47

 Problem . . .

The lights were not long enough to give the full effect of the light, this was a problem because the whole point was to represent the quote visually. while trying to mess around with the lighting to see if anything could be done, I also discovered I had forget to buy a mirror and it is proving difficult to find a mirror that will fit flush in the bottom of the light.

The Items for LEDHUT also didn't come with instructions which wasn't a problem as my Qualified electrician boyfriend knew what he was doing.

. . .Solved

I ordered again from LEDHUT and this time ordered twice as much LED Multi coloured strip lights.

MULTI COLOUR GEL WATERPROOF LED STRIP - 6O LEDs P/M - 2.5M ROLL £14.75 X2

TOTAL FOR LIGHTS ALONE £74.97

Construction of Light

Lights not long enough to give full effect.

The construction of the light was undertaken by a qualified electrician. The Materials ordered from LEDHUT did not come with any wiring instructions. The electrician wired it and also drew a wiring diagram for me. We also discovered that I did not order enough LED strip lights and because of this the light did not have the effect I had anticipated for. I had to order 2.5 meters of LED strip Lighting which in total is 5Meters for the whole light.

Trying to find a 20cm circle mirror became impossible, I had brought a small mirror on a plastic stand from the pound shop and it gave the effect I wanted but needed to fit the bottom of the light flush. I had scanned the internet, shops and high streets and the nearest measurement mirror I found was 17cm, when placing the mirror in the bottom of the light it did not give the same effect as the small pound shop mirror, so I decided to use it.

The stand which was going to be made for the mirror no longer needed to be made as the transformer and controller was now attached safely to the bottom of the light, giving the light a free standing tilt.

There are many things I would have done differently with the light like having a custom made tulip as the light, but in the time restriction I had and budget it was not possible. The light is a prototype and there are many adjustments and improvements to make for the light to be a successful product, but the light gives the illusion I was working to.
